New trends that are coming in security - we need to worry.
First, wow it's been a long time since I posted here. I promise not to let that happen again.
I've been looking at what the new technologies, business drivers and market trends are and I can see a worrying convergence that will start hitting companies in the near future.
The problem has been replicating the in person shopping experience, online. I often accompany my wife and daughters on shopping trips, while the goal may be to buy a shirt for my 11 year old daughter; when they go into the shop, the desired shirt is often displayed alongside other, matching articles of clothing, enticing shoppers to buy additional items.
There is a plethora of data that is available to companies. E-commerce transaction data, user information - including their preferences, product databases. This is the big data problem. We have had analytic software for some time, that can surface and report on correlations. What is missing is the added intelligence, be it human of machine, that will allow that advanced correlation, enabling smart, relevant recommendations.
What's the security angle? We will be required to enable the integration of product databases, sales information and customer information. The information in these data sources will be mashed together and relevant information extracted enabling the quick cross selling to customers. Because this technology does not exist in house, we will require third parties to access the data to enable this data mining. And that's the problem.
