Glitch? No it's incompetence!

Today's Global IT system failure suffered by BA is... unfortunate.

Many people will be inconvenienced and it may even have life changing consequences.

The press are going to call it a computer glitch and have a little giggle, shrugging it off.

However this needs to be called what it is, gross incompetence, bordering on negligence, seriously affecting the bottom line of the company. So who is to blame? The board will point to the IT department, the IT department will point to third parties, third parties will point to change control, and no one will be held to account.

Board rooms around the world need to start treating IT as a peer and not as a servant, consequently the CIO/CTO needs to be accountable to the shareholders, as is a CEO or CFO. The CIO's neck will be on the line when there is a failure of this magnitude. Until then, the existing board of directors needs to take responsibility, they cannot, and must not, be allowed to pass the buck.
