Musician phishing scam

Everyone is laughing at the email Annie Lennox shared recently, purported to be from a Los Angeles radio station. Effectively she was sent an email form letter. Saying the radio station has 100,000 uniques. That she (Annie) has potential and could get put into rotation. Finally the radio station can put her in touch with an artist development firm who can get her onto 150 radio stations (the real reason for the email).

Luckily Annie has been around long enough and know this scam. Her reply is " Whilst it's obviously a bit of fun sharing the email I received telling me I had "potential" sadly up and coming musicians are sent these kinds of scams every day. My digital team receive hundreds of them every year.

I'd urge any new (or indeed establ
ished) artists to send that kind of email straight to your trash. Companies reaching out cold to help you, sending emails that are clearly formulaic with links asking for cash to upload your tracks are a very dodgy business indeed and not one I want to see anyone fall foul of
"
I think musicians need to be especially wary of these types of scams as this is the perfect vector for more malicious attacks that can lead to nasty malware like key loggers, used to steal all your passwords and then access any pre-release mixes, masters, parts, stems or works in progress that may be held on a personal machine. Or even the installation of Ransomware that will encrypt all the files on the device the chances of recovering this files even if a ransom is paid are not good.
